5 Cooling Summer Foods By Rachel Schwartzman #WellbeingWednesday

With summer in full swing, it is hot outside! For today’s Wellbeing Wednesday tip I thought I would share, some easy foods to include in the diet that can help cool us down. I think we can all use a little of that.

Watermelon. What would summer be like without this delicious fruit? Besides being very hydrating at about 91 percent water, watermelon is bursting with heart-healthy lycopene, vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and magnesium. Delicious on its own, also perfect in a fruit salad, or savoury dish. If you have never tried a watermelon smoothie with fresh mint, I highly recommend it. The cooling nature of the mint combined with the watermelon, makes a tasty and refreshing summer drink.

Cucumbers. Coming from the same family as the watermelon, cucumbers are another delicious cooling food. Besides being very hydrating, cucumbers have anti-inflammatory properties, are rich in antioxidants and vitamin K.

Green Leafy Vegetables. Greens are full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, protein, and fiber. They contain high-quality water to help replenish electrolytes lost in the summer heat. Raw food is cooling by nature, so try to eat your greens fresh on these super hot days.

Rich in sodium, magnesium potassium, phosphorus and calcium, it’s a perfect drink for athletes, pregnant mamas, little ones and anyone needing some extra hydration. Try having it on ice with fresh mint, use it as the base in a smoothie or even top it off on an alcoholic beverage. Making homemade popsicles are another easy and delicious summer treat.

Spicy Foods: Our tendency is to stay away from hot foods in the summer heat, but in fact spicy foods can cool us down. They raise our internal temperature, which creates sweating and dissipates the heat from inside to the surface of the skin. Try adding cayenne, chili peppers or hot sauce to your food to get some cooling benefits.

I hope you are all enjoying this summer weather. I know it is hot, but the summer season is in fact short and before you know it we’ll be wishing for this summer heat. So for now, be safe and stay cool.
