A match made in Design Heaven – Maura Grierson Reinvents her Leslieville Home

An inside look at Maura Grierson, Virgin Radio Toronto’s Breakfast Show co-host’s Leslieville Home Re-Imagined by Eve Weinberg, Hillcrest Design Inc.

When it came time to buy her first home, Maura Grierson, Virgin Radio Toronto’s Breakfast Show co-host, fell in love with a Leslieville home circa 1915.

“The first thing I noticed were that the original hardwood floors were cut on the diagonal. I loved it instantly! I knew from just looking at the floors that the previous homeowners had style.  And the skylights! I love natural light”.

Fantastic as it was, Maura knew that in order to make it feel truly like home she needed to imprint it with her own personal style. “When I moved in, I painted all the walls white so I could start with a fresh blank canvas. It’s been 6 months now, and I am ready to add some drama!”

Re-imagining a house on a budget requires strategy, so a friend connected Maura with Interior Designer Eve Weinberg who shares her love of all things vintage.

IMG_7152eMaura “I like pieces with a past… furniture and decor that tell a story of the era they were designed and the owners who used to enjoy them.  Shopping vintage is also a green choice, and it’s usually better on your wallet too.”

A match made in design heaven! With 13 years of experience, Eve, owner of interior design firm, Hillcrest Design Inc., works with clients to create eclectically modern yet functional interiors which reflect their unique style. “I call my approach to design work ‘lifestyle driven’ to accentuate the focus on the individual or family and how design solutions are driven by their daily activities and personalities.”

Fast forward one week….Maura and Eve meet at Maura’s Leslieville home where strategic design decisions are made and the hallway is selected as the first room to be re-invented

Maura; “The hallway is the first thing you see when you walk through the door and it’s currently a space that’s been left as an afterthought. I just plopped a vintage trunk there and it’s totally not working. I want the front entrance to set the tone for the entire house. It has to be fun, funky, welcoming, inspire creativity… Oh and functional! It has to be functional. “

Adds Eve, “ “Maura is such an energetic personality with style, whimsy and sophistication that I want to create a hallway that will reflect that same wow factor.”

Next step? Shopping! Items found will be added to the storyboard created by Eve; a practical foundation for ensuring sound decisions are made. Maura suggested they start their hunt for funky finds at her local monthly haunt the Leslieville Flea.

Chris and Brigid from the Leslieville Flea put out a request to their over 40 vendors listing the items on Maura and Eve’s wish list. Luckily for our readers, Village Living Magazine will be there with camera on hand to record it all…the hunt, the vendors, the fabulous finds and ultimately, Maura’s choices.

Stay tuned.
