Back to School Books for the Entire Family

It’s now official—the summer has come to an end, and the school year has started. September is a busy time as we launch into the calendar-packed year ahead. Books are a great tool for the entire family to get back-to-school ready. After all, students are not the only ones who need to get into the mindset for 300+ days of classes and extracurricular activities.

Here are three reads to help students (and parents) prepare for a great school year:

Milk Goes to School
Written and Illustrated by Terry Border
For ages: 3 – 7

Does your youngster have back-to-school jitters? This story follows Milk as she aims to make a good first impression on her foodie peers Waffle, Carrot and Cupcake. Unfortunately, Milk’s classmates consider her “spoiled” at first, but ultimately they all make up and become friends. The pictures, puns and comical characters in this book make it a fun and easy read for the whole gang.

Rulers of the Playground
Written and Illustrated by Joseph Kuefler
For ages: 4 – 8

This picture book gives students a dose of playground politics just in time for September. Amongst his peers, Jonah declares himself king of the playground. All the children continue to play with the exception of Lennox who also wants power . . . to rule as queen! It’s a cute and timely tale that explores themes of friendship, kindness, and ultimately peace, in the kingdom of play.

The School Year Survival Cookbook
Written by Laura Keogh and Ceri Marsh, Photography by Maya Visnyei
For ages: Parents of school-age kids

For busy families on the go, this cookbook is jam-packed with advice, strategies, and nutritious recipes to navigate the school year. Written in a charming style by the bloggers behind Sweet Potato Chronicles, it’s an entertaining resource filled with appetizing visuals and cute quotes from kids. Parents will learn time-saving tips to prepare brainy breakfasts, become lunch ninjas, and triumphantly transform leftovers from dinnertime. Personally, I am looking forward to trying out the treats section, including the banana chocolate quinoa bars. Yummy!
