Celebrate Mom, this May, with Books

This month’s Hooked on Books is dedicated to all the leading ladies in our lives. Not that we need a special reason, but Mother’s Day reminds us to show our appreciation of and gratitude to our moms.

Searching for the perfect present can be challenging, so I recommend sharing special books, which can be enjoyed by the whole family. I love curling up with good books with my kids, and watching them discover the wonder of reading. Stories that celebrate mom and family, in particular, pull at my heartstrings.

Here are four books which you can enjoy, this Mother’s Day, with mom and all the maternal figures whom you adore:

Baby will learn new words with this bestselling book

Everything is Mama
Written by Jimmy Fallon, Illustrated by Miguel Ordóñez
For ages: 1 – 3

Popular entertainer Jimmy Fallon, from The Tonight Show, is also a dedicated dad and a bestselling author. His latest children’s book, Everything is Mama, is perfect for Mother’s Day.

This picture book recognises how babies worship their mothers, while also introducing little ones to new words (besides ‘mama’). With bright illustrations and simple text, this sweet book will earn a special place in baby’s first library.

Boss man! A humourous tale about family structure

The Bossier Baby
Written and Illustrated by Marla Frazee
For ages: 4 – 8

Fans of The Boss Baby will delight in this sequel, welcoming the new CEO in the family, a baby sister. True to the original, this book is laugh-out-loud funny with many jokes that adults will appreciate. It’s also a fun book for welcoming a new sibling to the family. Parents will find this title hilarious, as it answers the question of who in the ‘corporate structure’ is truly in charge!

Girl power! is the theme of these inspiring, true tales

The Book of Heroines: Tales of History’s Gutsiest Gals
Written by Stephanie Warren Drimmer
For ages: 8 – 12

This pick covers a broad spectrum of famous females who changed the world for the better. The chapters are filled with stories of over 100 exemplary women of the past and present, including courageous Anne Frank and modern role model, Malala Yousafzai.

This resource spotlights female role models to inspire this generation of students to become leaders of tomorrow.

Banana ‘nice cream’ recipes for the sweet tooth

Guilt-Free Nice Cream
Written by Margie Broadhead, Photography by Jacqui Melville
For: all ages

For moms with a sweet tooth, Guilt-Free Nice Cream provides a healthy guide to an indulgent frozen treat that we happen to love. In this case, it’s nice cream, a banana-based alternative to ice cream. This cookbook provides mom – and the entire household – with recipes that don’t require an ice cream machine and which contain flavours ranging from Very Berry to Rocky Road. Cooking is a great family activity and mom will definitely enjoy making these desserts with the junior chefs at home!
