1. Why would a pregnant woman seek out chiropractic care?

More and more mothers are discovering the many benefits associated with chiropractic care during pregnancy. They appreciate their chiropractor’s respect for their body’s natural design and function. The health benefits of chiropractic are being recognized as important ingredients to a healthier pregnancy and an overall easier birth.

2. Can chiropractic make pregnancy more comfortable for me?

Chiropractic care in pregnancy is an excellent addition to your traditional prenatal care. Pre-existing or unnoticed imbalances in the spine and pelvis become stressed during pregnancy and these pronounced discomforts can make it more difficult to perform routine, daily activities.

There are many benefits to receiving chiropractic care during pregnancy, some of which include:

– Reduction in back and pelvic pain
– More ease with the natural changes related to pregnancy
– Increased space in the pelvis facilitating the baby’s growth
– Correct positioning of the pelvis, allowing for ease of labor and delivery
– Decreased labor time
– Greater ease and comfort during labor and birth, thereby reducing the need for pain relief drugs during delivery

3. Is chiropractic during pregnancy safe and will the adjustments be painful?

Chiropractic care is one of the safest forms of healthcare for pregnant women and their children. It is a non-invasive, drug-free, natural approach to health and wellness with allows for the release of any tension or imbalances in the body. Not only are the techniques altered specifically for the pregnant woman, but special pillows, tables and supports are used to ensure a comfortable and relaxing experience. As your body changes and grows, you will eagerly anticipate your visits.

4. I’ve heard that chiropractors can turn breach babies, is this true?

A major reason for caesarean sections and medical intervention during birth is breech babies, or babies that has not turned to face downward in preparation for birth. This position can lead to intrauterine constraint (IUC). IUC is defined as any force external to the developing fetus that obstructs the normal movement of the fetus.

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment for pregnant mothers designed to relieve the causes of intrauterine constraint, allowing the baby to turn head down into a vertex position. This technique aligns the pelvis and releases any tension in the ligaments of the uterus, allowing for a baby to turn naturally. The chiropractor does not physically move the baby, but the gentle adjustments open up the space in the pelvis, allowing the baby enough room to move into the proper position. If the baby is already in the correct, face down, position, the technique helps maintain that ideal position leading up to their delivery.

The Webster technique has been found to have an 82% success rate in clinical studies (JMPT July/August 2002) for posterior or breech babies. It is a gentle and safe way to help promote a natural and healthy birth experience.

5. What have other women experienced?
In my practice, the feedback that I receive from mothers that were or are under care during pregnancy has been overwhelmingly positive. They observe marked improvements in their overall health, quality of life and general disposition throughout and beyond their pregnancy. Many report excellent birth outcomes with a memorable birthing experience. Some moms who have had children previously but had not had chiropractic care at that time note having a better, easier pregnancy the next time due to their chiropractic care.

“I’m at 7 months pregnant now and I don’t know if I would be doing as well as I am if it wasn’t for Dr. Shaila.   She not only ensures my baby is getting full nerve flow and stimulation through chiropractic treatments, she is also my prenatal mentor and health partner.   She has offered nutritional advice through each stage of my pregnancy, helping me cope with the first trimester nausea, food aversions, and offering creative ways to get enough nutrients despite these aversions.   She offers amazing health care classes designed to truly educate her patients on how they can stay healthy throughout pregnancy and raise healthy children.  I will definitely be having Dr. Shaila adjust my baby within days of delivery.” – K.M.

“I had back pain when lying down pregnant which lead to no sleep. Dr. Shaila relieved the pain where I could finally sleep! After a birth with forceps, my pelvic floor felt very heavy and uncomfortable. After Dr. Shaila worked on me I noticed great improvement! Thank you Dr. Shaila!”   -A.L.
