Leaside, Toronto July 9, 2015 – On July 16, 2014, a six-year-old girl, Georgia Walsh, was tragically killed while crossing the street in Leaside, just blocks from her house. The community has come together to mourn the loss of this precious young life with the Walsh family. To continue to honour Georgia’s memory, her love of baseball and give back to the community that she loved, the first annual Georgia Walsh Memorial All-Star Games is being held on August 29, 2015.

All of the funds raised will go towards the Trace Manes playground rejuvenation project. The Walsh family feels this project is vital to focus on improving the safety of your children, while ensuring that freedom of exploration occurs. Working in conjunction with the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation, the donations will help build a $1 million dollar state of the art playground and splash pad for the local community in memory of Georgia. This play area will also have specially designed swings and/or saucers in in addition to replacing the sand with rubberized tile, making it completely accessible to special needs children.

The GTA’s top minor league players will participate in Leaside’s first ever Rookie All-Star Games that will feature both a junior and senior game. There will be a special opening pitch, player announcements by Sportsnet’s Christine Simpson, skills competitions, face painting, tattoos, inflatable slides, food, raffles, games and prizes in addition to a surprise Blue Jay guest, Canada’s favourite hockey dad Walter Gretzky and a surprise appearance by one of the Toronto Blue Jays.

There are a number of ways that people can get involved and support the cause:

  • Cash donations towards Trace Manes Playground rejuvenation project
  • Attend the day and support through our games and raffles
  • In-kind donations of food or beverages for the event or prizing for games and raffle
