Gifts for Moms who Love to Read
I love May and celebrating Mother’s Day with my family. What I don’t love is looking for presents for the special women in my life who are sometimes challenging to shop for. If you have this dilemma, I recommend shopping for gifts connecting to reading.
With so many different categories to choose from, a good book or reading accessory is a perfect gift for any mom – and it sets a great example at home. Families who read inspire kids to read. I say this as a self-proclaimed book nerd raising two little bookworms to like reading as much as I do.
These days, books aren’t the only things you can pick up at the local bookstore! Here are a few literary-inspired gifts to consider for mom this May:
Cozy clothing, blankets and pillows
I hope my family is reading this column, because this would be my ideal gift. I like to get all cozy while reading before bedtime. A throw blanket is a must for me, and comfortable pajamas and robe too, paired with a good book I can’t put down. I have always wanted to try a pair of Indigo reading socks, hint-hint.
Reading accessories and decor
Consider charming accessories that literary lovers will appreciate for decorating desk and home. I recently discovered the Bibliophile line illustrated by Jane Mount – comprised of artisanal vases, stationary, agendas and journals – all designed with the bookworm in mind. They make a great gift year-round, too!
While many associate customized name labels for children, they also make a great gift item for adults. With my mother-in-law in mind, she is incredibly generous lending out her favourite books from her personal collection to friends and family (and Tupperware too). Mabel’s Labels would ensure she gets them back!
Books or gift card
This idea is for the mom who is always searching for a good title, takes her time to read, brings a book on holiday, and does not have patience to wait for the most popular picks to borrow. The key here is to know the types of genres she is into, but get a gift receipt just in case. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a gift card to Indigo.
Reading retreat at the spa
For the ultimate of splurges, I recommend getting mom away from the hustle and bustle of her daily routine. Consider providing her some rest and relaxation with a luxurious day spa or overnight getaway! Ste. Anne’s spa resort in Grafton, Ontario is my happy place. What I love most is that this is where you leave your electronics behind and get lost in a novel between lunch and a massage. I recently went with my husband for the day, equipped with a bathing suit and a book I have been meaning to read. The serene environment was perfect for disconnecting — there’s no shortage of places to take a nap, enjoy vistas, and simply unwind. This option can have a higher price tag, but it can be combined as a Father’s Day gift. Double win! What’s on your Mother’s Day wish-list?
