3 Must-Haves to Keep You and Your Family Healthy While Travelling
For many families with school-aged kids, March signals the arrival of a much-anticipated break. Some families will be lucky enough to escape south for some sunshine, while others will stay closer to home and enjoy the last of the winter on the slopes. Whatever your plans, make sure to pack these natural essentials to keep you and your family healthy on your travels.
Not all probiotics are created equal, so whether you take probiotics regularly or not, including a travel-specific probiotic in your bag is a great idea. Healthy gut flora can mean the difference between a great vacation and a ruined one; and since you’ll certainly want to indulge in many new and different foods while travelling, the particular strain of bacteria found in traveller’s probiotics, Saccharomyces Boulardii, will help to prevent any symptoms that come from food-borne illness.

Clinical trials confirm the efficacy of Saccharomyces Boulardii in preventing and treating diarrhea and upset stomachs; as well as other gastrointestinal diseases like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disorders such as Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. It has also been known to help treat and prevent urinary tract infections and vaginal yeast infections. For these reasons, traveller’s probiotics should be at the top of your travel essentials’ list.
A POWERFUL NATURAL DISINFECTANT
On your journey, you’re likely to come in contact with lots of different bugs, touch lots of escalators and door handles, and be exposed to a variety of possible illnesses. It’s important to have a strong disinfectant that you can use both internally and externally to prevent any coughs and colds which could ruin your vacation.
I recommend always having oil of oregano and oregano essential oil, on hand. These potent oils are both derived from the oregano plant, and have powerful antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Oil of oregano, a product which comes diluted in a carrier oil, is the perfect option to take internally after a long plane ride or crowded bus or train journey. It can be taken straight, but is very strong, so add a few drops of the oil to a shot of water and drink. Oil of oregano is not only the perfect cold and flu buster, it can also be used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory infections and yeast infections. All very common while travelling.
For external use, reach for oregano essential oil. A very potent concentrated extract, it can be used as a surface disinfectant by adding 15-20 drops into a 250ml spray bottle filled with water. Shake and use as you would any spray disinfectant. It also makes a great fruit and veggie wash while on the go.
For centuries, the dark berries of the European black elder plant have been used as a winter remedy. More recently, clinical trials have revealed the berries’ efficacy in preventing viruses like influenza, relieving sinus pain and boosting the immune system.
Often found in syrup or lozenge form, the drops are an easy-to-pack option. At the first sign of a scratchy throat, pop one in and enjoy; they taste delicious, making it easy to get your little ones on board with this potent, preventive remedy, too!
