HOOKED ON BOOKS – Start off the New Year with Canadian Reads #teachmetuesday
As we embark on the month of January, we welcome the start of a new year. This is a very exciting time, as our country has a special milestone approaching, Canada’s 150th birthday … and the countdown is on!
Now more than ever, Canada is a great theme to include in your children’s reading material. Choose books by Canadian authors and illustrators, as well as books that explore all things Canadian. To borrow a phrase from Canada’s biggest bookstore, as a new year’s resolution let’s “Read the North.”
Here are some special items to consider for Canadian youngsters.
Written and Illustrated by Paul Covello
For ages: baby – 4
What better way is there for little Canadian readers to learn their ABCs than with an alphabet book about their very own country? A is for Arctic, B is for Beaver, C is for Canada … and the list goes on. This board book is very bright and colourful which will appeal to youngsters. Adults will also have a lot of fun flipping through the pages all the way until Z is for Zamboni Machine.
The Darkest Dark
Written by Chris Hadfield and Kate Fillion, Illustrated by The Fan Brothers
For ages: 3 – 7
Perfect for all the kids who dream of outer space, this picture book is inspired by the childhood of celebrated Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield. Readers may be surprised to learn that young Chris was afraid of the dark. This story has a meaningful message about having big aspirations and conquering your fears. As an added bonus, at the very end there is a personal message from Chris and a collection of photos from his youth and from outer space.
