Hooked on Books – Fresh Books for Spring #teachmetuesday with Joanne Sallay
As we transition to a new season, this brings many new themes to explore with little learners. Spring is associated with new beginnings, growth and renewal. It’s a time to exit hibernation mode and go out to explore the outdoors. We bask in the sunlight, fresh air, and wondrous changes in nature. When it’s time to come back inside, here are three fresh books to enjoy after taking a brisk walk outside:
You Are One
Written by Sara O’Leary, Illustrated by Karen Klassen
For ages: baby-3
This sweet story is the perfect gift for new moms on Mother’s Day. It’s a read-aloud the entire family will enjoy – especially the little star of the show – and a celebration of the special milestones that make up a baby’s first year including crawling, trying new foods, and babbling. You Are One will become a treasured keepsake for years to come.
If I Had a Gryphon
Written by Vikki VanSickle, Illustrated by Cale Atkinson
For ages: 3-7
If I had to choose one word to sum up this story, it would be “magical.” This is Vikki VanSickle’s debut picture book after four successful middle-grade novels. This creative tale follows a little girl who decides her new hamster is not very exciting and dreams of a more exotic pet. The bright illustrations and colourful pages are filled with delightful details. By the end, readers alike will agree with Sam that traditional pets are not so bad after all.
Written and Illustrated by Loren Long
For ages: 5-8
As we welcome the spring season and the trees regain their leaves, we can celebrate with Little Tree. It’s a great resource to explore changing seasons with children. This story follows a little tree that lives in a little forest and is hesitant to grow up and shed his leaves. It’s a coming-of-age picture book that young readers (and the adults who love them) will enjoy.
