Hooked on Books – Fun Books for Students this Fall Season #TeachMeTuesday
Autumn is a spectacular time of year. The change of season brings a crispness in the air, new colours in the leaves and bright pumpkins to display. As students settle back in the classroom, there are many exciting fall events and themes to celebrate with books. Here are just a few:
By Sandra Boynton
For Ages: 0-3
Trick or treat, it’s Halloween Time. For all fans of Sandra Boynton’s Little Pookie, here comes Spooky Pookie. This sixth board book represents the latest in the series, but hopefully not the last. Young readers will enjoy this introduction to Halloween and this adorable character’s quest for the perfect costume. Read individually or follow them all, Little Pookie is sure to be a hit with little ones.
What Pet Should I Get
By Dr. Seuss
For Ages: 3-7
Dr. Suess fans span the world with admirers of all ages. They are now in luck as the manuscript and art once lost were discovered and brought to life. The late Theodor Suess Geisel was made famous for his pet protagonists so there’s no surprise about the theme of this tale. While the context is about picking a pet, there’s a deeper meaning for children when it comes to decision-making. In fact, the ending allows young readers to decide the conclusion for themselves. For further teachable moments, there is a special back note explaining the history, discovery and how the book came to be.
The Bambino and Me
Written by Zachary Hyman and Illustrated by Zachary Pullen
For Ages: 6-9
The great Bambino himself, Babe Ruth, once said: “Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world.” For followers of baseball and history, these two worlds collide in this children’s historical fiction book. A great complement to the World Series this fall. This story follows a young Yankees enthusiast and his adventure meeting the legendary Babe Ruth. The pages are filled with nostalgia, fantastic baseball illustrations and meaningful history. As an added bonus the back has an author’s note sharing some inspiration. For fans of this story and its pictures, Hockey Hero makes its debut this month from the same author/illustrator team.
