Which eateries do your kids beg to go to?
My daughter’s preference is always Bar Ape. Her go-to is anything chocolate, but because it’s incredible Gelato, there are no bad choices! As for my son, Pukka is his absolute favourite. He always orders the butter chicken and garlic naan bread. Whether it’s a hot summer night or a special occasion, these local gems are as different as they are mouthwatering – and I heartily endorse both.
What is your favourite outdoor space?
We are fortunate to have many fantastic options in the area. My favourite park is Hillcrest, but nothing beats Cedarvale Ravine! It has everything: some of the best tobogganing in the city (it was called Killer Hill when I was a kid), outdoor and indoor skating rinks, tennis courts, fields, a splash pad, a dog park… This oasis in our backyard makes city living a little easier.
What unexpected place, service or event has become your most valued resource?
Definitely Solutions Health Care Associates. It is convenient to have a walk-in clinic close by – especially one that is open six days a week.
What events have you planned or helped plan for the community?
Children’s education is a cause that is very important to me and, as such, supporting Humewood Community School – our local K-8 – is an obvious choice. Six years ago, I organized the school’s first Pumpkin Drive and have been running it ever since. The proceeds are directed to school initiatives, although a portion of the funds are donated to the STOP Food Bank. I have also been a sponsor for the Fall Fair and Snowball, which are the school’s two biggest fundraising events of the year. Typically held in September and February, respectively, the Fair is one of the area’s longest running and most anticipated family-friendly events, while the Snowball is an annual adults-only party where parents, friends, and members of the community can connect for a good cause. There is dancing, eating, drinking, a silent auction, and a crazy amount of fun.
What graffiti art do you most appreciate?
I love all the lane way art! The increasing number of individual garages as well as entire alleys displaying fun, creative, colourful backdrops really make the neighbourhood pop with character. It is impossible to pick just one favourite… it’s like having to choose between Bar Ape and Pukka!
