I was fortunate to miss a week of this cold weather with a quick escape to the sunshine state. I found some delicious Meyer lemons in the grocery store and used them for my lemon water first thing in the morning. Meyer lemons are in season from November to March and are a cross between a traditional lemon and a mandarin. They are equally as beneficial to the body as the classic lemon, they just have a slight sweetness to them and are so fragrant.

So today’s Wellbeing Wednesday tip is all about the lemon, more specifically the benefits of lemon water first thing in the morning. It’s a great way to start your day. Simply, cut a wedge of a lemon (it can be any lemon, a meyer lemon is just a bonus!), squeeze it into a glass of room temperature or warm water and drink away.

Keeps you hydrated: Most people start their day off with a cup of coffee. Coffee not only dehydrates your body but creates an acidic internal environment. I am not suggesting you forgo your morning coffee, just to start your day with a glass of lemon water first.

Supports Digestion: I see many patients that suffer from hypochlorhydria, also known as low stomach acid. The stomach needs to have a very low pH to support the digestion of food, but it’s also important for killing off any microbes, bacteria, or fungi that could be living in our food, and don’t want in our intestines. An acidic stomach with good HCl is the first step to a healthy digestive system. Lemon water first thing in the morning is a simple tip that will promote good HCl.

Promotes Detoxification: Probably the most known benefit of lemon water is its cleansing and detoxifying properties. It increases liver enzymes and supports phase 1 and phase 2 of the detox process. We want to ensure we are moving that “gunk” out of our bodies.

Pumps the Gallbladder: The bitter flavour of the lemon stimulates not only the liver but the gallbladder to secrete bile. This is a great way to gently detoxify your body first thing in the morning and eliminate unwanted toxins.

Increases alkalinity: Although lemons contain citric acid, they actually promote an internal alkaline environment. This is important for healthy as bacteria, fungi, viruses and cancer cells cannot live in an alkaline environment. Green vegetables are another great food item to include in your diet daily to promote an alkaline body.
