Teachers on Call: Celebrating Thirty Years of Helping Students Make the Grade, by Jessica Green
All great ideas start from a seed; it’s how you plant that seed that determines its eventual success. For Rhona Sallay, founder of Teachers on Call, the idea came to her while she was tutoring students who had specific learning needs and challenges. “I’ve always believed that every child deserves a chance to maximize their learning experiences,” says Rhona. It’s because of this strong belief, coupled with her special education background and Masters Degree in Education, that she received more and more appeals for her tutoring services. “I started receiving requests to tutor in subjects that I was not familiar with, like high school physics and chemistry,” says Rhona. “I realized it would be a good idea to branch out and hire other teachers to help fill these requests.” Recognizing that there was a need within the school system to support both students and their families, Teachers on Call was born.
The three decades of success for Teachers on Call starts with the team’s innovative tutoring techniques. “Initially, the tutoring requests we received were for students who needed help with remedial work,” says Rhona. “Now the industry has evolved to include not only remediation, but enrichment services for all grades and subjects.” To address this need, Teachers on Call only hires Ontario Certified Teachers (OCT) who are highly qualified in their subject areas and up-to-date with the Ontario Curriculum and Ministry guidelines. This approach has won rave reviews from clients who have turned to Teachers on Call for their patient, knowledgeable and achievement-orientated tutors. “Our daughter was helped through their interventions with support for IB math,” remarked one client. “Now she’s going into her second year at the University of Toronto.”
These advancements in the industry have also led to innovations in the teacher/tutor partnership. “While curriculum is key, we also go beyond and assist with time management and organizational strategies,” says Joanne Sallay, Director of Teachers on Call. “Additionally, we offer specialty services such as French Immersion and International Baccalaureate tutoring.”
Fostering a creative and harmonious environment to facilitate learning is what makes Teachers on Call a success story. Emphasizing open communication and focusing on the specific needs of each student rather than employing a “one size fits all” strategy has turned the company into the thirty year-strong institution it is today.
What’s next? “We would be happy to know that our students have graduated, reached their academic goals and are now in the post-secondary programs of their choice,” says Joanne. Teachers on Call has made an indelible impact on countless students, regardless of where they are on their learning path. “While we started with a handful of tutors thirty years ago,” says Joanne, “the growth and success of our company is attributed to our team, partners, and the supportive families who have helped us along the way.”
