What the Tech?!?!

Are we in a post-PC era?

This month I pose this question to you, my loyal reader. Are we in a post-PC era?

You might be asking yourself, ‘What does that even mean?’ The post-PC idea is that we have moved away from the traditional PC or personal computer, as in a desktop or notebook computer. Have we moved to using tablets, phones, and other wearables as our main source for consuming, creating and enjoying content?

My initial answer is no. For instance, I’m writing this article on a notebook. As I got thinking I realised I probably could have used my iPad to write this article just as easily. I also realise that I and many other people use the phone a lot. I use my phone seven hours a day, and while I don’t use my phone to write on or to edit video, the truth is, I can.

I then looked at a younger generation, the 12-18 age range, and I instantly noticed that these youth almost always use tablets or phones.

They don’t have the same affection for the physical keyboard as I do, nor are they dependent on the form of a computer. For this generation, they are really ‘touch first’ as opposed to the mouse and keyboard first.

I instantly noticed that…youth almost always use tablets or phones

So when you are ready to replace your current computer, what will you choose? A traditional computer or notebook, or maybe you wanna just dip your toe in the water and try a 2-in-1 hybrid similar to the Microsoft Surface, a tablet with a removable keyboard and trackpad. Or, are you ready to just use a combination of your phone and a tablet? All I can guess is that time will tell.
